Agriculture is the principal source of livelihood for about half of the Indian population.Particularly, in Telugu speaking states, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, providing livelihood for 62% of population and contributing about one-fourth of gross domestic product (GDP). Both states are blessed with rich natural resources and diverse agro-climatic zones suitable for growing various food and commercial crops and have great potential to further increase crop yields. However, small land holdings, growing population, shrinking agricultural land, climate change, and globalization pose new challenges to agriculture and necessitate some immediate measures to meet the food demands of growing population and to increase farmer’s income. To serves its mother land, TANA took an initiative and started an Agriculture forum. The main objective of the forum is to discuss major challenges in some of the key areas, including crop inputs, marketing,post-harvest technology, skills development, and agriculture and human health and how TANA can assist to increase the per capita agricultural income and improve quality of life of a farmer. Furthermore, forum also aims to create awareness to NRIs onopportunities available in agriculture sector both in US and India.

Based on 2015 Agriculture Forum discussions, TANA has been implementing two projects under the name of “RYTHU KOSAM TANA”

  • Distributing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)/Ryhtu Rakshana Kit to reduce the exposure of farmers/farm workers to toxic pesticides.
  • Distribute GreenSeeker,a hand held crop nitrogen sensor that assesses crop health and helps in decision making on the amount of nitrogen fertilizer (e.g. urea) to be applied to the crop. This helps to reduce input cost to farmers and lesser environmental pollution.

In addition, a policy recommendation was submitted to the Governments of India and AP/Telangana.

While continuing our efforts to expand ongoing programs, during 21st TANA convention,Agriculture Forum is planning to organize the following two programs from May 27-28, 2017.Awide range of experts representing various sectors of agriculture from India and USA, including academia, government, farmer representatives, and Industry will participate and present their viewson how to meet current challenges in agriculture.

  • Saturday, May 27, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM: TANA RythuKosamSadassu
  • Sunday, May 28, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM (noon): Panel Discussion on Labhasati Vyavasayam Cheyyatam Ela?

The ultimate goal of the Agriculture forum is to continue/expand ongoing programs and use this platform to initiate new programs in partnership with Andhra and Telangana governments, local governing bodies, industry, and academia to fill some of the gaps in agriculture for achieving sustainable agricultural production.
